Ask SAM for Donating prom dresses

In News
Q: I would like to donate several prom dresses to local projects collecting prom attire for Winston-Salem/Forsyth County high school students in need. Please make me aware of any such projects.

L.C.

Answer: One group that we are aware of locally is the Fairy Godmother’s Closet, which provides prom attire at no cost for girls and women who are registered to attend the Joy Prom, an annual free event for individuals 16 and older with special needs.

“It is our hope that the recipients of these dresses will not just feel beautiful for one evening, but that through their experience at The Fairy Godmother’s Closet that they will have increased self confidence and self worth,” said Shelley Hundley, one of the organizers.

She said they would appreciate prom dress donations as well as women’s formal wear (bridesmaid and cocktail dresses, etc.), scarves and wraps that are appropriate for cocktail/formal attire, jewelry and clutch purses. They do not typically take shoes unless they are dressy ballet flats, she said.

They are always in particular need of plus-sized dresses, size 16 and up, she said.

Donations can be dropped off at the welcome desk in building B at Cavalry Day School, 5000 Country Club Road, which is accepting dresses through March 9, and at Robinhood Family Pharmacy at 3443 Robinhood Road during business hours, which is accepting them through March 30. After that, volunteers will need to pick up dresses as needed. They can pick those up year-round for the annual event.

The Joy Prom will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, April 13 at Calvary Day School. Registration for both guests and volunteers has just opened; more than 350 volunteers are needed.

Elsewhere in the Triad, the Greensboro Youth Council also has a prom wear drive underway through March 19, taking donations of dresses, dress shirts and pants, suits and accessories at locations including the Cheshire Center, the Greensboro Cultural Center and the Griffin and Brown recreation centers. This will lead to an event where teens can shop for clothes and accessories April 12-14. For more of the news details about prom dresses in ombreprom.com online!
